Residents in northwest WA have had a lucky escape after Tropical Cyclone Lua slammed into the coastline with winds of up to 220 km/h, but left minimal damage in its wake.

Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) spokesman Les Hayter said on Sunday that coordination centres in Broome and Karratha had been closed, emergency workers were being demobilised, and control of the region handed back to local authorities as Lua fizzled out.
