Tropical storm Chanda struck Madagascar at about 18:00 GMT on 8 January.Data supplied by theUS Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Centersuggest that the point of landfallwasnear20.3 S,43.8 E.Chanda brought 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around64 km/h (40 mph).Wind gusts in the area mayhave beenconsiderably higher.
