VIDEO: Mount Etna’s First Blast of 2012

Italy’s Mount Etna has erupted for the first time in 2012, spraying fountains of lava as it cut loose with a column of steam and ash.
The eruption of Europe’s highest active volcano follows a highly active year 2011, a year that saw at least 18 separate eruptive outbursts starting in January.
Lava flows as well as fountaining lava and columns of ash have characterized these eruptions. This week’s outburst saw ash and steam reaching more than 16,000 feet above sea level, BBC News said on Thursday.
