China Heat Wave Intensifies Drought in the South West

Days of searing heat have heightened the effects of drought in a part of southwestern China.
Drought has hit 26 counties in Chongqing Shi, stressing crops and cutting drinking water supplies, according to Xinhua News. Two rivers and 51 reservoirs “dried up,” the report said.
According to data accessed by forecasters at AccuWeather.com, rainfall since the start of July in Chongqing city has been 3.5 inches versus normal amount of 8.5 inches.
Thursday marked 10-straight days of 100-degree heat in the city. Hottest of these, Aug. 17, reached 109 degrees, or barely short of the all-time high of 111 degrees.
Chongqing will suffer stifling heat through the end of the week, then significant rainfall and a break in the heat could take place early next week.
