Drenching, Strong Storms for Upper Midwest Today

“…numerous thunderstorms later today will be capable of unleashing damaging winds.”

While downpours are the main threat from the thunderstorms currently invading the Upper Midwest, the region will face another and potentially more severe round of thunderstorms later today.

The thunderstorms moving through the Upper Midwest this morning are the remains of the severe weather that rattled the northern Plains late on Tuesday.

While the dangers of damaging winds and hail have eased, several of the thunderstorms have and will continue to produce flooding downpours this morning.

One such drenching thunderstorm dropped 3.70 inches of rain in less than two hours on southwestern Sioux Falls, S.D., earlier this morning. Numerous streets across the city became submerged and impassable.

The soaking thunderstorms will weaken later this morning, but the return of sunshine will set the stage for another round of thunderstorms to erupt this afternoon.

Unlike this morning, numerous thunderstorms later today will be capable of unleashing damaging winds. Hail will also be produced by some of the thunderstorms, while a couple of isolated tornadoes may touch down.

The risk for flooding downpours will continue into this afternoon, especially with the ground already saturated from the thunderstorms this morning.

The area at greatest risk for severe weather this afternoon lies from southern Wisconsin to northern Iowa. This includes La Crosse, Wis., and Waterloo, Iowa.

The danger for the strong and drenching thunderstorms will then inch into northern Illinois and lower Michigan tonight, threatening Chicago and Grand Rapids.

As Thursday commences, the eastern Great Lakes will likely be dealing with flooding downpours from the thunderstorms.

South of these thunderstorms, the door will open for more humid air to surge back into the mid-Atlantic.
