Wichita Heat Burst Last Night

Jun 9, 2011; 9:52 AM ET

Wichita, Kansas experienced a “heat burst” last night. Their temperature spiked from around 80 to 100 near midnight, then dropped back down. Their humidity went from around 55% to 7%, then back up, all in less than two hours.

Of course, this was nothing like the famous heat burst of Whitney, TX in 1960. If I have time later today I’ll add some radar data and look for additional observations. As I blogged several years ago, heat bursts are not fully understood, but WikiPedia has a reasonable explanation.
