ROUNDUP, Mont. — Central Montana’s Musselshell River has started to recede after swamping the small agricultural community of Roundup for the second time in two weeks.

Dozens of residents were forced to evacuate homes they had just started to clean up as the Musselshell gushed into the town’s low-lying neighborhoods Wednesday morning.

But this time around, the town was better prepared for the high water, which was fueled by record rainfall combined with the melting snowpack.

Some residents had time to lay sandbags around their homes. And the city built protection around its water system, which was compromised during the first round of high water.

The river level started to drop Wednesday and is expected to level out at 10 feet by Friday afternoon.
