A slow-moving storm will dump its heaviest rain over eastern New England today, raising flood concerns.

A sluggish storm system will soak portions of the Northeast through this evening, leading to localized flooding issues and slow travel.

An area of high pressure to the north has slowed the storm system’s movement to a crawl, allowing it bring a prolonged period of soaking rain to the Northeast. Abundant moisture from the Atlantic is being tapped.

The heaviest rain will soak New England, from Connecticut through Maine, through this evening.

Rainfall totals will be over an inch across much of this zone with some rain amounts of more than 2.0 inches. Boston, Mass., Providence, R.I., and Portland, Maine, are all included in this corridor of heaviest rain.

A larger area of the Northeast will get an additional 0.50-1.0 inch, including New York City.

Localized flooding can occur, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

Minor flooding is already occurring across portions of the Connecticut River Basin and more incidences of this are likely into tonight.

Ponding of water may lead to an increased risk of hydroplaning when traveling at highway speeds. Motorists are urged to slow down, including along heavily traveled stretches of I-84, I-87, I-90, and I-95.

Never drive over a roadway with water over it, because the water may be deeper than it appears. It only takes a foot of water to carry a vehicle away.

With chilly air being trapped over the interior Northeast, snow will mix in or fall above elevations of 2,500 feet.

Farther south and west, the rain will taper off to showers across much of the mid-Atlantic.

On Tuesday, heavy rain sent water rushing over roadways across some communities from Ohio and Kentucky to Virginia. Several road closures resulted.

Rockslides occurred near Hot Springs and Millsboro, Va., due to torrential rainfall.

The scheduled game between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees was postponed on Tuesday night due to heavy rain soaking the Yankee Stadium. This was the second washout at the stadium in a week.
