ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Operators of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline say they’re planning to shut down the pipeline again Friday night to install a 157-foot bypass pipe so repairs can be made to a pump station where a leak was discovered.

Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. has said this new shutdown is expected to last about 36 hours.

The 800-mile-long pipeline was shut down Saturday morning after the leak was discovered and restarted Tuesday night. Alyeska said that as of mid-day Thursday, the pipeline was carrying about 320,000 barrels a day. Before Saturday morning’s shutdown, it was carrying about 630,000 barrels a day.

Officials say an 800-gallon containment tank is being used to capture leaked oil. Alyeska says crews have recovered more than 7,800 gallons of oil from the pump station since the incident began. No oil has been found outside the building.
