Bjork is putting a creative spin on karaoke with the launch yesterday of a three-day signing marathon aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues.

Specifically, the 45-year-old singer/songwriter is trying to block a Canadian takeover of Iceland’s energy company HS Orka, insisting the country’s natural resources should remain under Icelandic control. Bjork is trying to get 15 per cent of the population — about 35,000 people — to sign a petition that would force the government to consider revoking the takeover.

So far, more than 20,000 people have signed the petition — and she’s hopeful the karaoke event will push that number even higher. She says, “Anyone will be allowed to sing. And we intend to sing our resources back.”

So, if you happen to be in ReykjavDik this weekend, consider belting a little “Free Bird” and helping Bjork protect Iceland’s resources.
